The Department of State Services has freed the embattled ex-Economic and Financial Crimes Commission boss, Abdulrasheed Bawa, after exactly 134 days spent in the custody of the secret police.
According to Punch,Bawa was released from the national headquarters of the secret police, ‘Yellow House,’ in Abuja, on Wednesday night.
Bawa was arrested and detained by the DSS on June 14, 2023, following an invite over undisclosed reasons, after he visited President Bola Tinubu earlier on the same day.
Punch reports that following Bawa’s arrest on June 14, 2023, he was being probed for alleged financial impropriety during his active years in the anti-graft agency.
Sources privy to the development also revealed that the embattled ex-EFCC boss refused to hire a legal representative despite his confinement.
When contacted late Wednesday night, the spokesperson for the DSS, and that of the EFCC, Dr Peter Afunanya and Dele Oyewale didn’t respond to enquiries by our correspondent on Bawa’s release.
The PUNCH had reported how Bawa was probed by the new EFCC Chief, Ola Olukoyede, in 2019, over alleged sales of seized assets worth over N4.8 billion.
