MTN Says Insecurity May Disrupt Telecommunications Services In Nigeria

Ebuka Daniel

MTN Nigeria has said in a recent report that its service in Nigeria may be disrupted due to the worsening security situation across the country, especially in the Northern region.

The country’s largest network service provider said this as Nigeria’s security situation has become more threatening.

Insecurity in Nigeria ranges from mass abduction of school students, kidnappings for ransom, farmers herders’ crisis and the lingering terrorist attacks in the North.

MTN wrote in a message to customers seen by Reuters, “Sadly, we must inform you that with the rising insecurity in different parts of Nigeria, service delivery to your organization may be impacted in the coming days,”

“This means that in some cases, our technical support team may not be able to get to your site and achieve optimum turnaround time in fault management as quickly as possible.”

Insecurity has dragged the country’s unemployment level to 33.3 per cent, resulting to over 23 million people being jobless.

Recent data reveals that the service provider is the country telecom industry market share leader.

The South African company has 39.72 per cent of the market share translating to 74.8 million subscribers.

Nigerian Internet users declined by nine million subscribers to 144 million the first quarter of 2021, compared to the 153.30 million subscribers recorded in the last quarter of 2020.

Also a total of 192,413,613 subscribers were active on voice as against 204,601,313 in fourth quarter of 2020.
