Over 165 Nigerians Benefit From FG’s Shoemaking, Leather Production Programme

The Federal Government, through the Nigerian Institute of Leather and Science Technology, has trained 165 Nigerians in shoemaking and production of leather goods.

This was disclosed in a press statement by the ministry titled ‘NILEST graduates 165 trainees on leather goods’.

“The Nigerian Institute of Leather and Science Technology, under the Federal Ministry of Science Technology and Innovation, on Thursday in Abuja graduated 165 trainees on Footwear manufacturing and leather goods processing/production across the country,” it said.

The Minister of State for Science, Technology and Innovation, Mohammed Abdullahi, who spoke at the event, described the leather industry as one of the most vibrant sectors in national economic development.

According to him, the industry is crucial for job and wealth creation, infrastructural and national development.

The statement said, “The minister further said the reality about these developments is that 90 per cent of the benefits goes to foreign countries while on 10 per cent goes into domestic accounts, adding that the ministry through NILEST is making frantic efforts to reverse the huge capital flight by putting together the first-ever standalone National Leather and Leather Products Policy in Nigeria and its implementation plan.

“He said the policy and other established manufacturing, important and exportation platforms would help checkmate certain operations and regulate stakeholders’ activities within the industry.”
