NEPZA, OGFZA Court Customs Partnership On FTZ’s Development

The Nigeria Export Processing Zones Authority, NEPZA and Oil and Gas Free Zones Authority, OGFZA have solicited the support of the Nigeria Customs Service, NIS, in the development of the nation’s Free Trade Zones, FTZs in the country.

The Managing Director/CEO of NEPZA, Prof. Adesoji Adesugba and his counterpart from OGFZA, Senator Tijani Kaura made the request when they paid a courtesy call on the Acting Controller General of NIS, Mr Bashiru Adeniyi in his office in Abuja.

In his opening remarks, the Managing Director/CEO of NEPZA, Prof Adesoji Adesugba highlighted the roles of Free Trade Zones in job creation, poverty reduction and national economic development.

He said for NEPZA and OGFZA to achieve their mandates as Agencies saddled with the responsibility of developing the sector, there was the need for effective collaboration with the Nigeria Customs Service.

According to him, stakeholders in the sector recently met in Abuja to brainstorm on how to reposition the sector for optimal performance and resolved to meet with the Nigeria Customs Service on the outcome of their meeting to further seek the way forward in the industry.

Prof. Adesugba used the opportunity to congratulate Mr Bashiru Adeniyi on his appointment as the Acting Controller General of NIS and commended President Bola Tinubu for making the right choice in the appointment.

He described Mr Adeniyi as a well trained and experienced Custom officer who rose from the ranks to become the Acting Controller General of NIS.

On his part, the Managing Director of OGFZA, Senator Tijani Kaura who corroborated the views of Prof. Adesoji Adesugba also congratulated Mr Bashiru Adeniyi on his well deserved appointment

He therefore stressed the need for effective public- private sector collaboration towards developing the nation’s Free Trade Zones.

Responding, the Acting Controller General of NIS, Mr Bashiru Adeniyi promised the Service readiness to partner the two Agencies to fast track the growth of the nation’s economy.

Mr Adeniyi said Nigeria Customs Service is ever committed to collaborate with necessary Government Agencies in the task of ensuring national economic development in line with the Renewed Hope agenda of President Bola Tinubu’ a administration.

At the end of the visit, a five man Committee was set up to fine tune ways of possible partnership among the three Agencies based on the resolutions of stakeholders at the recent meeting in Abuja.
