Nigeria Police Force spokesperson, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, has explained why families of kidnap victims are fond of paying ransom to kidnappers.
Speaking as a guest on Channels Television’s Politics Today anchored by Seun Okinbaloye on Thursday, Adejobi said kidnappers always work on the psyches of the victims’ families.
Adejobi said this leads to the victims’ families not involving security operatives for fear of losing their relatives.
“Paying ransom is criminal according to the provisions of our law but the problem we have in most cases is that families of victims, in most cases, they don’t carry security operatives along,” Adejobi said.
“They get scared because kidnappers always work on their psyche; ‘don’t tell security agents, if you do we are going to kill your relation’, so they keep quiet.
“In every offence you must understand the psychology and now we need to understand the dimensions into kidnapping, dimension typology of kidnapping.”
Adejobi explained the pattern kidnappers use to implore whenever they abduct their victims.
“It got to a stage they kidnap, get money, kill and still go ahead to negotiate for the corpse. So we actually need to sit down and understand the typology and dimensions in some of these crimes to know the psychology behind this,” Adejobi said.
