The Federal Capital Territory is poised to restore the glory of sports in schools as a way of helping learners maximize their potentials.
The Ag. Chairman, Bring Back our Schools Sports, Dr. Mohammed Sani Ladan, a Director and Secretary Of the FCT Secondary Education Board (FCT-SEB) gave this indication when he received the Chairman, Sports Link Global Foundation in his Office recently.
Dr Sani Ladan maintained no pupil is without any potential.“ All they require is to be assisted to develop along the lines of their innate ability and talent”, he said.
Dr. Ladan, who holds a doctorate in Sports administration revealed that measures have been put in place to encourage sports in schools so that students can be assisted to develop skills and maximize their potentials to become self employed and not rely on paper qualifications.
According to him, Sports is made compulsory in all FCT schools and government is determined to adopt the slogan of “catch them young” so that those that are gifted in any area of sports can be identified early and be encouraged to fulfill their potentials and dreams.
Dr Sani Ladan expressed optimism that through Sports, social vices and addiction among students will be minimized.
To achieve this end, he said FCT was willing to join hands with all partners to ensure that sports is given the pride of place in schools.
Speaking earlier, Dominic Tata Nworah (SNR), Chairman, Sports Link Global Foundation informed the Director that his NGO recognized that FCT- SEB, being the custodian of the schools, its support and encouragement was important for its goals to be achieved.
He said a tour of the schools revealed the need for support in the area of sports equipments and facilities .
According to him,he had mobilized the support of stakeholders like the embassies, Foreign Ministry and sports ministry to fill the gaps.
Consequently, Mr Nworah promised that football pitches will be constructed and maintained in all the FCT schools as a first step towards addressing infrastructure deficits in sports.
He also announced that a biannual sports competition , called the Ambassador Cup has been instituted in the FCT that will involve all the public primary and post primary schools.
The maiden edition of the Ambassador Cup competition, Mr Nworah said,will be held in October/ November this year and the India High Commission is the host
