The deadline for the linkage of Subscriber Identity Module with the National Identity Number has been shifted by 26 days, the Nigerian Communications Commission has said.

The commision disclosed this in a joint statement signed by Ikechukwu Adinde, its Director of Public Affairs and the National Identity Management Commission.

The move for the NIN-SIM linkage was as result of the Federal Government’s commitment to secure Nigerians and their data, Isa Pantami, the Minister of Communication and Digital Economy said earlier this year.

He made the clarification due to agitations and criticism by Nigerians suggesting lack of faith in the policy.

The deadline was shifted for the sixth time to June 30 over shortfalls in the process, but Nigerians now have until July 26, to comply.

So far only 57.3 million Nigerians have enrolled for the NIN, the authorities said.

The regulator said, “The Federal Government has approved the extension as part of its efforts to make it easier for its citizens and residents to obtain the NIN and it is important to take advantage of the extension.

“There are now a total of 57.3 million unique NIN enrolments, with average of 3 to 4 SIMs per NIN. With the great number of enrolment centres across the country, every citizen and legal resident should be able to obtain their NINs.”
