Mauritania Slams $2.5mn Fine on Telecom Operators over Poor Service

Mobile operators Mauritel, Mattel, and Chinguitel were again sanctioned by the Mauritanian Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (ARE) for the poor quality of services in many cities, localities, agglomerations and road axis.

This time, they are fined more than 95 million ouguiyas (about $2.5 million).

The sanction comes after a control operation carried out by the regulator between April 17 and May 22 this year. Mauritel gets a fine of 62 million ouguiyas, Mattel gets 27.32 million ouguiyas and Chinguitel receives 6 million ouguiyas.

Let’s recall this is the second sanction for the same reason since the beginning of the year. The first occurred on January 2 and the operators were fined a total of 143.72 million ouguiyas (about $3.7 million).
