Japanese Shares Fall on Shinzo Abe Resignation

The Nikkei 225 plunged 326.21 points or 1.41% to 22882.65 on Friday closing 0.33% lower for the week after national broadcaster NHK stated that Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is set to resign, as he wanted to avoid causing problems to the government due to a worsening of his chronic health condition.

The leader has battled the disease ulcerative colitis for years.

Meantime, Gov. Yuriko Koike extended requests for establishments serving alcohol and karaoke venues in the heart of the capital to shorten business hours until September 15 as part of efforts to stem the spread of the novel coronavirus. On the data front, Tokyo’s CPI increased to 102.10 points in July from 101.90 points in June of 2020.
