The number of people infected with the coronavirus across the world surpassed 18 million, of which at least 689 thousand people have, according to data released by the Johns Hopkins University.
In the US, the epicenter of the disease, the number of infections rose by 47.5 thousand in the last 24 hours to near 4.66 million. Brazil reported 25.8 thousand new cases to 2.73 million and India more 52.6 thousand to 1.80 million.
Elsewhere, South Africa registered 8.2 thousand new virus cases, Peru 6.6 thousand, Mexico 4.8 thousand, Iran 2.6 thousand and Chile 1.9 thousand.
Colombia is now the 9th most affected country with 317,651 covid-19 infections. In Europe, the UK added over 700 new cases.
