Global Coronavirus Infections Hit 22.4mn

The number of people infected with the coronavirus across the world crossed 22.4 million, of which at least 788 thousand people have died and 14.3 million have recovered, according to data released by the Johns Hopkins University.

In the US, the epicenter of the disease, the number of infections rose by 46.4 thousand in the last 24 hours, while Brazil reported 49.3 thousand new cases and India a record 69.7 thousand.

In Europe, concerns about a second wave of infections mounted as several countries across the region saw the numbers rising. Spain reported 6.7 thousand new infections, followed by Germany (1.6 thousand) and the UK (0.1 thousand).

In terms of fatalities, the US and Brazil continued to lead with a total of more than 173 thousand and 111 thousand, respectively. Mexico has the third-highest death toll in the world with 58.5 thousand, followed by India (53.9 thousand) and the UK (41.4 thousand).
