FCT proposes residence for rural doctors

The FCT administration has spoken of plans to provide accommodation for the duration of stay of doctors posted to satellite towns around Abuja.

Doctors are regularly posted to any of 10 satellite towns around Abuja, but many relocate due to challenges of accommodation and amenities, leaving health centers there unstaffed and residents underserved.

“Housing is a big challenge,” said FCT minister Muhammad Bello.

He made the statement in talks with the FCT chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association in Abuja on Tuesday.

“What we are now doing, especially for the hospitals outside of Abuja, is ensuring that any doctor or nurse or senior medical personnel that gets posted to a satellite facility, should be able to get accommodated so that by the time you are done with your posting, you just move on and the next doctor goes in.

“Gradually, we hope that will support you in accommodation,” he said.

The doctors’ association in the FCT has proposed medical outreaches to all area council in the territory.

On Tuesday, it called for the support of the FCT administration for the success of the programme.
