Over N500bn Invested By Private Firms In Nigeria’s Automotive Industry

Oluwasina Phillip

As a result of the Nigeria Automotive Design and Development Council unrelenting efforts, over N500bn has been invested by credible Nigerian and international companies in setting up factories towards the development of the nation’s automotive sector.

The companies are Dangote-SinoTrucks, Innoson, PAN, Cherry, Peugeot, Stallion Group, Hyundai, Honda, Elizade, Lanre Shittu, JAC, Kojo, Nord, Omaa, Vistar, Jet Systems, National Trucks Manufacturers, GAC, Kia, Mikano/Geely.

The Council’s Board Chairman, Senator Osita Izunaso, together with Board Members, Mr. Tokunbo Aromolaran, Dr. Nankin Bagudu, Engr. Emmanuel Kwaya, Reverend Lambert, Dr. Obi, and Director General/CEO Jelani Aliyu, early this week toured a number of these factories.

These committed companies are now actively producing/assembling vehicles in Nigeria.

They have a combined installed capacity to produce over 400,000 vehicles per year.

This capacity is not only made up of fossil fuel powered vehicles: recent developments have seen the start of Electric Vehicles assembly in Nigeria with the Hyundai Kona EV, and the test run of the Jet Systems Electric Van.

The implication of this is that the Nigerian Automotive sector can produce 400,000 vehicles per annum.

The government has taken steps to encourage Nigerians to buy that number of these locally produced/assembled vehicles instead of spending money on 400,000 second hand imported vehicles that have been used and dumped by other counties.

The NADDC had recently  inaugurated the first Electric Vehicle Charging Station in Nigeria, in Sokoto State.

NADDC  noted that the pilot project, inaugurated at the Usmanu Danfodio University, Sokoto (UDUS), was also in collaboration with the institution.

This is the beginning of a new era for Nigeria as it marks the realisation of the government’s desire to build sustainable technology in the country.
“Moreover, our vision and mission at NADDC are not just to enable the production of vehicles in Nigeria but also to produce the best and most advanced technology vehicles in the country.
“Today, we have inaugurated the first 100 per cent solar energy powered charging station in Nigeria,” he added.
