The National Association of Nigerian Traders on Sunday urged the Federal and State Governments to compensate traders that were affected by the fire incident in Enugu and Lagos markets.

The President of the Association, Barrister Ken Ukaoha, made the appeal on Sunday in Abuja.

On Saturday, the Ogbaete Market in Enugu State went into flames, while on Sunday, there was yet another report that Ladipo Spare Parts Market in Oshodi, Lagos State also went into flames

Ukaoha said NANTS is overwhelmed with these tragedies and deeply sympathize with all its members in these markets who are the victims of the fire incidents.

He said, “While praying for God’s divine intervention, we are urging the Governments of Enugu and Lagos States to promptly deploy resources to assist the affected traders while also finding ways to reconstruct the burnt markets.

“We also call on the Federal Government to come to the aid of these traders who are currently nursing the wounds inflicted by Covid-19, and many of who are yet to see any means of assistance, including the Covid paliatives.

“Government cannot allow her citizens, especially the vulnerable constituencies to remain under such double affliction capable of promoting crimes and criminality in the nation.”

He said it is time that the Ministry and Agencies in charge of disaster management to step in immediately to do the needful and rescue the economy at a period of this crisis.

He explained that while such necessary intervention is coming, the Association also expect that investigation to unravel the causes should be conducted.

“We call on all our members to remain calm while we seek ways to invite Government’s urgent attention to these unbearable disasters,” he added.
