Buhari Appoints New Nigeria’s Ambassador to WTO

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the appointment of Dr. Adamu Mohammed Abdulhamid, as the new Nigeria’s Ambassador to the World Trade Organization.

The appointment was contained in a letter sent by the Office of the Chief-of-Staff to the President, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari to the Minister of Industry Trade and Investment, Niyi Adebayo.

This was disclosed in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry titled, “PMB Appoints New Nigeria’s Ambassador to WTO”

The statement read in part, “The President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR has approved the appointment Dr. Adamu Mohammed Abdulhamid, as the new Nigeria’s Ambassador to the World Trade Organization (WTO), Geneva Switzerland for a period of (4) four years.”

Adebayo charged the new Ambassador to work together with the Director General of the Organization, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, members of WTO and other International Organizations including the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, International Trade Centre and World Intellectual Property Organization to move Nigeria’s Trade to the next level in the global organization.

Until his appointment, Adamu, was the Acting Head Chargé d’ Affaires of Nigeria Trade Office to the WTO, Geneva, Switzerland.

He holds an Msc. in Economics and International Development from Clermont Ferrand University, France, a Master Degree in Business Management and Leadership from London Graduate School, UK and a Doctorate of International Relations and Economic Diplomacy from the Commonwealth University, UK.

He has acquired 28 years working experience on World Trade matters and Trade Negotiations and was the campaign coordinator of Okonjo-Iweala in Geneva, Switzerland when she was vying for the position of the DG of WTO.

He led the Nigerian government team in Geneva, Switzerland in the campaign and winning of the position of Director-General, World Trade Organisation by Nigerian candidate, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo Iweala, 2021 – 2024.

He was National Secretary, task force/national committee on trade facilitation in Nigeria, 2010 – September, 2018; facilitator on the establishment of transnational border & regional markets at the six geo-political zones in Nigeria, 2008 till date.

He has also attended so many training and workshops such as international forum for national trade facilitation committees: boosting capacities and partnerships for implementation, 23rd – 27th January, 2017 at United Nations Secretariat, Geneva, Switzerland; policy makers course on trade facilitation by Trapca, 16th – 20th february, 2015 in Arusha, Tanzania; and WTO regional advanced trade negotiations simulation skills course on WTO negotiation skills, Johannesburg, South Africa,  9th – 13th july, 2012.

He has also attended the Netherlands trainees programme (internship) at WTO secretariat, Geneva, Switzerland, 16th February – 18th December, 2009; regional intensive course on trade negotiations skills, Mauritius, 26th – 30th may, 2008; and course on economic partnership agreement between the EU and ECOWAS, organized by World Bank, held at Asokoro, Abuja.
