FG lauds WTO for building capacities in SPS and TBT

The Federal Government has lauded the efforts of the World Trade Organization for organizing training programs aimed at enhancing participants’ capacity in the application of agreements on Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) Measures and the Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT).

Speaking at the opening ceremony of a three-day WTO National workshop on the application of the Agreement on Sanitary and Phytosanitary measures and the Technical Barriers to Trade in Abuja, Dr Evely Ngige, Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment observed that WTO has continued to engage in programs and activities deliberately tailored towards enhancing the knowledge and expertise of government officials from developing countries and observer members of the Organization

Ngige noted that the efforts of WTO have engendered a better understanding of the two concepts by the officials of the countries and enabled them to benefit more robustly from the implementation of the provisions.

According to her, this has also strengthened their capacity to engage in the work of the SPS/TBT committees

The organization also ensures that strict health and safety regulations are not being used as a subterfuge to exempt domestic producers from participation in the supply of essential commodities within their local borders and elsewhere, Ngige added.

In his keynote address at the workshop, the Nigerian Ambassador to World Trade Organization, Amb(Dr) Adamu Mohammed AbdulHamid encouraged the Enlarged National Focal Point on WTO and other Multilateral Trade Related Issues to ensure that their various subcommittees are functioning very well especially the SPS and TBT committees.
